Chapter 19

“We the willing, led by the unknowing, are doing the impossible for the ungrateful. We have done so much, for so long, with so little, we are now qualified to do anything, with nothing.” Konstantin Josef Jirecek

The trip to the camp where Don and the deputies had taken refuge didn’t take long. It was only a couple of miles to the south along some back roads. Several logging roads crisscrossed near the camp.

It was early evening when they found a place to hide their vehicle. Walter Johnson, one of the deputies, and Dottie’s husband, Jack, were the designated eyes on the sheriff’s former camp.

“Grab that brush over there to wipe out the trail some. I’ll pull the netting out to cover the ride and add some branches and greenery,” Jack suggested. “How far are we from where you all camped?”

“About half a mile. We should be there before dark. Are we going to approach the group or just observe?”

“Just observe for now. If we see anyone there being held as slaves, we’ll go back and get some of the others. If they appear to just be minding their own business, we’ll back away and leave after we get some details on numbers, mobility, and firepower.”

Walt nodded his head in agreement. They were curious about the lack of noise as they approached the camp’s location. By this time of day, they had expected to hear people preparing a meal, talking around a campfire, gathering water, and setting up security for the night. All Walt and Jack heard were the crickets, mourning doves, and cicadas you would normally hear in the evening.

“I don’t like this,” Walt said.

“Neither do I, but we need to get closer and see what happened.”

The closer they came, the louder the insects' noise became, and a few newer ones, like flies, were added. No fires were seen, and the camp seemed to be abandoned. Jack and Walt turned on their flashlights.

“Oh, my God. What happened here?” Walt said as he turned and lost his supper off to the side of the trail.

Jack got on his radio. “Robbie. We have a problem here. No one is alive that we can see. I’d feel better waiting for some backup before we investigate. Bring Doc. I’m not sure if this was the result of a gunfight or illness.”

“We’ll be there shortly. Start a fire if you can safely.”

“We’ll leave the light on for you.” Jack turned to Walt. “Can you go get the ATV and bring it here? I’ll find someplace to start a fire.”

“I’d be more than willing to go and get our ride rather than stay here. You don’t see this sort of killing field working as a deputy.”

“Well, unfortunately, not my first rodeo. And nowadays, probably won’t be my last.”

With that, Walt left to get their ride, and Jack searched for an area to build a fire. He found a pile of wood and kindling. He even located an area blocked out that the group had apparently been using.
